We catch up with award-winning personal stylist and colour expert, Gigi Vakilzadeh as she shares some useful hints and tips of how we can look, and consequently feel, our best all year long.

Gigi, tell us what role you think our clothes play in how we feel?

Clothing plays a significant role in how we feel, serving as a powerful form of self-expression—a way to convey who we are, without uttering a word. After all, it takes only seven seconds to make a first impression, but eight subsequent positive encounters to reverse a poor one.

How important do you think it is that we maintain a sense of style as we age?

It’s essential. Maintaining a sense of style as we age, can bring a genuine boost to our wellbeing. Wearing something that makes us feel good can spark a dopamine rush, which naturally elevates our mood. When we put on an outfit we love, there’s often a sense of renewed confidence—a lift in how we carry ourselves—that’s beneficial at any age.

How does style evolve as we age and how can someone rediscover their personal style, particularly later in life?

It’s often said that we change every seven years, so it’s no surprise that our style evolves with us. Embracing this natural shift in personal style is important, as it reflects the changes in our personality, values, and lifestyle. Rediscovering style later in life can be incredibly refreshing. The key is to stay open to experimentation, which helps us understand what truly feels comfortable and authentic.

Many older adults find themselves with wardrobes full of unworn clothes. What advice do you have for simplifying a wardrobe?

The best way to simplify a wardrobe is to create a capsule collection—a minimal set of clothes that can be easily combined to make numerous outfits. Focus on classic, versatile pieces that suit your body type, colour palette, and lifestyle, so everything works well together. With around 10-15 carefully chosen items, you can create a range of looks, making getting dressed simpler and more enjoyable without the need for an overflowing wardrobe.

Parting with items that we've loved in the past can be incredibly hard but it's an important stage in the downsizing process. Do you have any tips on how to make this process less difficult? Are there any charities that you would suggest donating clothes to?

Letting go of clothes we once cherished and to which we attach sentimental value can be quite a challenge. However, there are several strategies to ease this process. Begin by identifying pieces that no longer fit your body, style, or lifestyle, and remind yourself that parting with these items will create space for a simpler, more purposeful wardrobe. One effective method is the “one-year rule”: if you haven’t worn something in a year, it’s usually a sign that it can be passed on. Consider the younger generation, who may appreciate some of the pieces in your wardrobe; I still enjoy wearing my mother’s 40-year-old trench coat with great pleasure. You might also find it helpful to take photographs of items to which you feel a strong sentimental attachment, allowing you to preserve the memory without needing to keep the physical item.

When it comes to donating, there are several wonderful charities that accept clothing. For instance, ‘Smart Works’ helps women regain confidence and prepare for job interviews by providing high-quality, professional clothing and styling advice.

‘Suited & Booted’, based in London, supports men facing barriers to employment by offering suitable interview clothing, styling advice, and preparation. They provide a complete outfit to help clients feel confident when attending interviews.

‘Calling London’ collects unwanted coats, sorts them and distributes them to those in need during the colder months. They work with charities of all sizes, supporting women and young children in shelters, young adults, the homeless, the elderly, and refugees.

You talk about having a cohesive wardrobe. What does this mean and where should we start?

A cohesive wardrobe is a collection of clothing that works in harmony, allowing for easy mixing and matching to create multiple outfits. Instead of a fragmented wardrobe that offers only single outfits, a cohesive one reflects your body type, colour palette, and lifestyle. To start, focus on selecting versatile pieces that complement each other, ensuring they fit well together and simplify your dressing routine. When considering a new item, always think about how it can be incorporated into your existing wardrobe in at least three different ways, enhancing both your style and functionality.

Should we take the same approach to accessories and how important are accessories when choosing an outfit?

Yes, we should apply a similar approach to accessories, as they are essential for enhancing an outfit. It’s important to choose pieces that align with your style and wardrobe. Items like jewellery, bags, belts, and scarves can add personality and polish, making an outfit feel complete.

When selecting accessories, focus on versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with different outfits, just like your clothing.

As we age, our skin tones can change. How can colour analysis help older adults find the shades that make them feel their best?

As we age, our skin tones may not change significantly but can become more faded, making some previously loved colours appear harsh. If you’ve had a colour analysis before, you’ll still belong to the same seasonal palette but might benefit from softer shades. For those who haven’t undergone colour analysis, it’s a useful tool to enhance your complexion and learn to mix and match colours effectively. By identifying the shades that suit your skin tone, you can feel more confident and vibrant in your clothing choices.

Can you tell us more about ‘dopamine dressing’ and how colours can positively affect our emotions, particularly for older adults? Why do you think this is such an impactful concept?

‘Dopamine dressing’ is the practice of choosing clothing based on the positive emotions that certain colours and styles can evoke. This concept is particularly beneficial as we age, as wearing uplifting colours can significantly boost mood and confidence. Bright, vibrant hues often inspire feelings of happiness, while softer tones can promote calmness and comfort.

How can understanding your colour season help simplify someone’s wardrobe choices and enhance their day-to-day wellbeing?

Understanding your colour season—spring, summer, autumn, or winter—is important because it simplifies wardrobe choices. By choosing colours within your seasonal palette, mixing and matching becomes easy, creating a streamlined wardrobe where you can quickly select outfits and know you’ll look your best. This approach not only saves time but also boosts your confidence and enhances your overall wellbeing.

How can people over the age of 65 make intentional purchases that not only suit their lifestyle but also reflect their personality?

Start by identifying what you actually need. Always shop with a plan in mind, opting for versatile and comfortable clothing that works for everything from casual outings to special occasions.

Take the time to consider the styles and colours you genuinely love. Additionally, focus on choosing versatile pieces that can be easily mixed and matched, allowing you to create more outfits without requiring a large wardrobe. Finally, prioritise comfort by selecting clothes that are both stylish and practical, paying attention to the fabrics and fit, especially for everyday wear.

Are there any fashion trends that we should avoid as we age, or is fashion for all ages?

Fashion is for all ages, and I believe you should wear what makes you comfortable and confident. There are no rules to avoid as you age, it’s all about embracing your personal style. If a trend brings you joy and makes you feel good, just wear it! Ultimately, fashion should reflect who you are, whatever your age.

Do you have any tips for finding the perfect occasion-based outfit?

Start by choosing versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down, such as a classic dress or smart trousers paired with different accessories.

Comfort is key, especially for extended wear, so you can enjoy the party without worry. Select stylish yet comfortable footwear, considering the venue and whether you’ll be standing or dancing. Lastly, if the weather is chilly, layer with a stylish coat or wrap that compliments your outfit.

Are there any shops you recommend for the over 65s?

I don’t believe in a cookie-cutter approach, as we are all different individuals with unique styles. However, there are several shops that cater well to the over-65s. The White Company offers luxurious loungewear and elegant pieces. John Lewis has a wide range of clothing suitable for various tastes. Marina Rinaldi is fantastic for size inclusivity, providing stylish options for curvier figures. Additionally, M&S has some excellent pieces that combine comfort and style.

If you had to give the over 65s some final words of wisdom with regard to style, what would they be?

Embrace your individuality and wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. Style knows no age, so wear what brings you joy and own it!
