Five Ways To Feel Your Best This Winter

DARLENE MAZEAU

As temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, it’s natural to feel less motivated. This is true for everyone, though colder months can bring added challenges as we get older. Research from Age UK shows that 52% of older adults feel concerned about the winter season. With that in mind, taking a proactive approach to wellbeing can make a real difference. Staying active, keeping warm and being socially connected are all small but powerful ways to feel our best, no matter the weather.

As Wellbeing Manager for Wallacea Living, I am passionate about encouraging our homeowners to take a proactive approach to their health; it’s central to our mission to ensure people are having the time of their later life. Below, I share my top five tips that can help you to feel your best this winter.

1. Stay active

Whilst it’s tempting to get cosy by the fire, winter is actually a great time to focus on keeping your energy levels up. Research suggests that even 20-40 minutes of moderate exercise can give your immune system a boost, helping to protect you from seasonal illnesses. Staying active is also key to maintaining your mobility, flexibility and independence. The resilience built up through regular activity supports you all year, but taking a long break from exercise can impact your body health. So, find ways to keep moving – your wellbeing will thank you!

The key question therefore is, how do we motivate ourselves to get up and go when it’s cold and wet outside? My advice would be to see the winter months as an opportunity to try something new. Look for indoor activities that you’ve always wanted to try. For example, there are numerous Tai Chi, Pilates and yoga studios in London that will not only help with your balance and flexibility, but offer a chance to relax, focus on your wellbeing and socialise with new people. Whatever your experience level, you’ll find plenty of classes to suit you—many of which we’re delighted to host right here at Wallacea Living.

Another great option to consider is swimming. For Wallacea Living homeowners, our onsite pool will offer easy access, but there are plenty of local pools to explore as well. Swimming provides a fantastic full body workout strengthening muscles, supporting heart health, and even boosting memory and mental clarity. Yes, you will certainly get wet, but at least you won’t need an umbrella!

Outdoor activities are just as rewarding, it’s all about finding a balance between indoor and outdoor exercise that allows you to keep moving, whatever the weather. Wrap up warm and take advantage of those cold, bright mornings with a brisk walk, bike ride or jog. Just remember to layer up with gloves, thick socks and a hat to stay cosy and prevent heat loss.

Exercising at home can be wonderfully flexible, offering plenty of ways to stay active without needing to go anywhere. Whether it’s an online fitness class, tidying up with a bit of extra energy, or simply getting up to make tea for visitors, small movements can make a big difference. Embracing these everyday moments is a great way to keep moving, whatever the day holds.

However you decide to keep active this winter, set yourself a goal, whether that’s building core strength, or continuing to walk 5,000 steps a day; you’ll find it really helps to maintain your focus.

2. Remain connected

Winter can be a wonderful time to nurture connections and keep your spirits high with social activities. Prioritising your social calendar is a great way to stay energised, so consider booking a dinner with friends, inviting family members for a visit, exploring a new exhibition, or catching a theatre show. Embrace the season’s invitations—it’s the perfect time to say yes to memorable gatherings!

While in-person events are enjoyable, there are also plenty of ways to stay connected from home if the weather keeps you indoors. Joining a virtual book club, taking an online cooking or language class or starting a digital fitness challenge can be engaging and fun. Our partner, Rest Less, offers a range of online events to explore. These activities not only keep you connected, but they’re also a great way to keep your mind sharp and engaged—especially during the quieter winter months.

Remember, sometimes a simple phone call can be a wonderful way to stay connected with friends and family. Reaching out may even lead to offers of a lift or a shared outing to an event. Be sure to check our events calendar at Wallacea Living as well—we host a variety of free activities, and we’d love for you to join us! You can view the calendar here.

3. Immune boosting nutrition

What we eat can have a big impact on how we feel, especially in winter. This season, it’s helpful to focus on immune-boosting, nutritious foods to keep energy levels up and support overall wellbeing, particularly as it can be more common to experience vitamin deficiencies.

With less sunlight and more time spent indoors during winter, you might not be getting enough vitamin D from your diet. Including sources like oily fish, egg yolks, and fortified margarine can help boost your levels. Similarly, incorporating vitamin C-rich foods—such as citrus fruits, green vegetables, and peppers—can support your immune system. Don't forget about calcium, too; dairy products, spinach, beans, and broccoli are excellent choices. It’s not about eating more but rather focusing on a nutritious diet that helps you feel your best. If you’re considering supplements, consult your doctor, and remember they should complement a balanced diet, not replace it.

Alongside good nutrition, staying hydrated is essential. While it’s easy to remember to drink plenty of water during the summer, it’s just as important to keep up your hydration in winter. Make a habit of sipping water throughout the day to support your overall wellbeing

4. Prioritise self-care

Be kind to yourself, winter can be a time that we all struggle with. Fill those winter months with activities that make you happy. By focusing on what makes you feel good and taking positive steps to put your own needs first, you can help to beat the Winter Blues.

One aspect of self-care could be to prioritise a hobby that you love and spending more time at home certainly gives you the opportunity to get stuck-in. Whether it’s picking up a musical instrument or perfecting baking your mince pies, use your time at home to stimulate your mind. Not only will you reap the benefits, but your friends and family will likely enjoy the results too.

When spending more time at home, consider creating a space that is dedicated to being a nurturing corner just for you. Incorporate soft, warm lighting and cosy textures to make this a welcoming space. You’ll find similar areas throughout the communal spaces at Wallacea Living, thoughtfully designed to encourage homeowners to prioritise their own wellbeing.

Make sure to prioritise your sleep as well as it plays a vital role in your overall health. Getting enough rest helps you to stay alert and focused throughout the day. Sleep deprivation can elevate the risk of health conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and it can also impact your mental wellbeing. Prioritising quality sleep is essential for feeling your best.

Finally, as part of your self-care routine, consider taking a proactive approach to your health. Make sure to order any repeat prescriptions ahead of time, attend annual vaccination appointments and have simple cold, flu and sore throat remedies on hand just in case you need them. These simple steps can help you stay well and feel your best this winter.

5. Practice mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness and gratitude can enhance mood and resilience in the colder months.

Take a moment to notice the things around you that bring you a sense of calm and relaxation. I often recommend creating a short, daily reflection routine which could include jotting down thoughts in a journal or noting ‘three good things’ at the end of each day. By staying mindful, we can nurture a positive outlook and feel more connected to the present moment.

Using a light therapy lamp is another effective way to boost your mood and energy levels. With reduced sunlight exposure during the winter, these lamps can help to simulate natural light, helping to balance your mood and support circadian rhythms. These lamps are widely available and can be a useful addition to a morning routine, naturally lifting spirits and enhancing focus.
