MEET THE TEAM: FIONNA BAILEY

WALLACEA LIVING

MEET THE TEAM: FIONNA BAILEY

In the first of our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we caught up with our Care and Wellbeing Director, Fionna Bailey, to chat about her passion for taking a proactive approach to wellbeing and what it really means for our homeowners.

At Wallacea Living, Fionna is responsible for developing and implementing wellbeing and care strategies that empower our homeowners to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life.

Outside of work. Fionna values spending quality time with her daughter, particularly taking walks together and exploring nature. She also has a keen interest in technology and how it can help to enhance people’s lives.

Hi Fionna! Let’s start the conversation by explaining to readers what you mean by the term proactive health and wellbeing?

For me, proactive healthcare and wellbeing are all about taking preventative steps to maintain good health before issues arise. This involves:

Preventing DiseaseTaking steps to identify and mitigate risk factors before they develop into chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

Early DetectionAt Wallacea Living, we offer regular wellbeing MOTs and provide access to our state-of-the-art Health Kiosk, which measures blood pressure, BMI, heart rate. Early detection can make a huge difference in managing conditions effectively.

Maintaining IndependenceWe empower our homeowners to look after their own health. Our Health Kiosk is available 24/7, allowing homeowners to monitor their vitals at their convenience.

Why do you believe this approach is so important?

Throughout my career, I’ve seen too many people neglect their health until it's too late—often leading to emergency situations or sudden care needs. A proactive approach allows people to take control of their health early, making small adjustments that lead to long-term wellbeing.

At Wallacea Living, we provide tools like wellbeing checks, personal training, and tailored nutrition plans to make proactive health management easy and accessible.

Wellbeing can sometimes be used as a 'buzz' word. What does wellbeing mean to you?

To me, wellbeing is about being comfortable, healthy, and happy in all aspects of life. Some businesses add wellbeing services without truly considering their impact, but at Wallacea Living, wellbeing is embedded in everything we do.

I often ask people: “Do you take your car for an MOT each year?” The answer is always yes. Then I ask: “Do you have a health MOT each year?” Most people say no. We take better care of our cars than we do ourselves! Wellbeing is more than just social activities—it's about actively maintaining our physical and mental health.

To achieve this, we encourage homeowners to engage in:

Regular health check-ups

Physical activity tailored to their needs

Mental stimulation through hobbies and social engagement

A balanced diet that supports long-term health

What are the lifestyle benefits that people can expect from living at Wallacea Living?

Our community offers a range of benefits that support proactive health and wellbeing:

Regular Wellbeing MOTsDetecting health issues early leads to better long-term outcomes.

Cognitive StimulationRetirement isn’t about slowing down! We encourage activities like book clubs, learning new skills, puzzle challenges, and group discussions to keep the mind sharp and reduce the risk of dementia.

A Safe and Supportive EnvironmentOur apartments and communal areas are designed for safety, promoting independence while minimising risks.

Community EngagementWe help homeowners stay socially connected through transport services, events, entertainment, and community activities.

Technology IntegrationWe encourage homeowners to use smart devices, fitness trackers, and online health resources to monitor and improve their wellbeing.

You mention technology. How can technology support us in taking a proactive approach to our health?

Technology plays a crucial role in supporting independent living at Wallacea Living. Examples include:

Smart SensorsOur apartments are equipped with discreet sensors that monitor movement patterns, providing peace of mind and quick alerts if needed.

Advanced Gym EquipmentOur gym includes bespoke training programs and equipment like an anti-gravity treadmill, which allows residents to exercise without putting pressure on their joints.

Personalised Health TrackingHomeowners can monitor their vital signs and progress through digital platforms, ensuring they stay on top of their health goals.

What can homeowners at Wallacea Living expect from an average week with regards to taking a proactive approach to health and wellbeing? What does it mean in a practical sense?

Every homeowner is introduced to our on-site Wellbeing Manager, who is available for health support, including:

Daily blood pressure checks and diabetes monitoring

Bi-monthly GP visits for consultations and health reviews

Six-monthly wellbeing MOTs to ensure optimal health

We also offer a range of weekly activities to promote physical and mental wellbeing, such as:

Group fitness classes (e.g., yoga, Pilates, strength training)

Social events and creative workshops

Guided outdoor walks to encourage movement and fresh air

Access to facilities like our cinema, salon, and nutrition-focused restaurant

If someone has an injury or existing medical condition, does it limit the effect that taking a proactive approach to wellbeing can have?

Absolutely not! Our bespoke wellbeing programs are tailored to each individual's needs. Whether managing a long-term condition or recovering from an injury, our Wellbeing Manager collaborates with medical professionals to create a personalised plan.

We believe in an individualised approach rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

What would you say to encourage readers to start being proactive about their health and wellbeing?

Many people assume they have plenty of time, but waiting until something goes wrong can limit your options. The first step is to act today, not tomorrow.

Being proactive doesn't have to be difficult. You don't need to spend hours in the gym - it's about making small, consistent choices that support your health. At Wallacea Living, we remove the barriers to healthcare by providing quick and easy access to support, technology, and a dedicated wellbeing team.

Don’t put your health on hold. Take positive steps today to ensure a long, independent, and fulfilled life.

It’s been so great to chat to you Fionna!
