The Art of Living Well at Wallacea Living

DARLENE MAZEAU

Darlene Mazeau, Wellbeing Manager at Wallacea Living, explores the principles of the world’s Blue Zones and reflects on how life at Wallacea Living naturally embraces them.

There are five regions in the world where people consistently live longer, healthier, and more connected lives. Known as the Blue Zones - Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Ikaria (Greece), Nicoya (Costa Rica), and Loma Linda (California) - these areas have the highest concentrations of centenarians globally. Though geographically diverse, these communities share a common lifestyle shaped by core habits and principles which include natural movement, purpose-based living, stress reduction, mindful eating and supportive social circles.

At Wallacea Living, these principles are woven naturally into daily life. From morning Tai Chi in the gardens to nutritious seasonal menus at dinner, to weekend creative workshops with award-winning designers and summer evenings shared with friends - the owners that live in our community will enjoy a way of life that quietly supports both vitality and longevity.

Our way of life is proven to work wonders!, A study commissioned by the not-for-profit retirement housing developer, the ExtraCare Charitable Trust, found that residents of retirement villages experienced a 75% increase in exercise levels, a 23% reduction in anxiety symptoms and a 24% improvement in memory. The best bit? More than 85% also reported never or rarely feeling lonely.

While there’s no single secret to a long and healthy life, longevity is based on countless factors, I find that the principles adopted in Blue Zones offer a way of living that makes a lasting difference.

Move Naturally

In Blue Zones communities, movement is seamlessly integrated into the daily routines of its residents, which makes sense, as regular, low-intensity activity has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve mobility, support mental clarity and contribute to longer, healthier lives.

How do we support our owner to keep moving? Gentle, restorative movement is part of the everyday rhythm. Owners can enjoy activities such as aqua gym, dance classes, Pilates in the gardens and gentle circuits, all designed to build strength, balance and flexibility. Living in the heart of London’s Marylebone, they are also on the doorstep of beautiful walking routes, from tranquil paths along Little Venice to leafy strolls in Regent’s Park.

Purpose

One of the most striking findings from Blue Zones research is the correlation between having a strong sense of purpose and longevity. People who feel they have a reason to wake up in the morning report lower levels of stress, better cognitive function and a stronger immune response.

I believe that purpose is not something that’s assigned - it’s something we help our owners nurture or rediscover. For some, that might be taking the lead in a writing workshop, mentoring others in a creative field, or contributing to the community newsletter. For others, it might be starting a memoir, mastering a new artistic skill, or sharing life experiences through storytelling evenings.

Down Shift

Down Shift refers to the practice of regularly slowing down and managing stress. Chronic stress is one of the most overlooked threats to healthy ageing, as it can increase cortisol levels, disrupt sleep, impact digestion and accelerate biological ageing. In Blue Zones cultures, daily pauses (whether through rest, reflection or simply living at a gentler pace) are a natural part of life.

Moving into a luxury integrated retirement community helps you effortlessly enjoy the calm, balanced lifestyle that you’ve earned. With a concierge to take care of life’s practicalities, everything imaginable on site, and a year-round calendar of purpose-driven wellbeing-focused activities, our Owners have the freedom to focus on what truly restores them. From the spa and gardens to guided meditation, workshops and more, every detail is designed to support rest and renewal!

Mindful Eating

In Blue Zones cultures, eating is guided by simple but powerful habits. For instance, the practice of eating until you no longer feel hungry, rather than full (or eaten too much!) supports metabolic health, improves digestion and lowers the risk of lifestyle diseases. When eating mindfully, mealtimes become a chance to slow down, savour flavours and share moments with others

How are we bringing these principles into everyday life at Wallacea Living? Seasonal, colourful menus are designed by our on-site chefs, using the best of British produce, with an emphasis on vibrant, colourful dishes. Owners have the option of consultations with nutritional experts and take advantage of tailored menu offerings in our Restaurant.

From smoothie and nutrition workshops, guest chef dining experiences and cooking classes, to herbal medicine sessions and garden-to-plate practices - such as homegrown herb cultivation- a year-round programme of activities all contributes to a culture of mindful, enjoyable nourishment at Wallacea Living.

Belonging & Community

In the world’s longest-living regions, a deep sense of belonging and connection is central to wellbeing. Connection and strong friendships are strengthened by communities that have social rituals and shared traditions, these activities inspire purpose, joy and resilience.

How is a sense of belonging woven into the spirit of life at Wallacea Living? A calendar of opportunities to connect every month, from wine tastings to themed dinners and piano evenings, to bridge clubs, photography walks and art history lectures. The options will be endless…Owners can share a meal in the restaurant with their family, invite a friend to our art deco-inspired bar, join in community BBQ events, storytelling nights in our library, or simply enjoy a morning chat with neighbours in the gardens.

Wallacea Living is a place where neighbours become friends. In our community social circles naturally reinforce wellbeing, through shared curiosity, new creative pursuits or the simple pleasure of telling old jokes to new friends.

At Wallacea Living, we nurture our Owners Wellbeing with the philosophies of the Blue Zones in mind. Our community is a wonderful tribe! One that supports healthier, more fulfilling ways of living together.
